Canal Projects Opens Its Doors To The Public On September

As a brand new public education facility to the community this fall, Canal Projects is excited about its grand opening in September. The building will be transformed into a creative hybrid of lab, studio, and exhibit space, complete with live programming in digital art technology, 3D design fabrication, and traditional art media. Program highlights include an animator-in-residence program with workshops, live screening of locally produced animation projects from BitLit Studios, and interactive exhibitions featuring work from ILoveDust.

They were founded by artist staff members who want to create an inclusive environment for artistic experimentation and creative learning experiences for all ages in the community. The organization’s mission is to support ideas and artistic expression in a collaborative space that invites the public to explore their creativity through hands-on experimentation and play.

Charles kim alpine is an alpine artist and director based in the Puget Sound area. Her background is in sculpture, fiber arts, and teaching. Kim’s artwork is focused on doing work that considers the politics of place, particularly in design and the built environment; a fascination with transformation, both physical and social; a compulsion to fold things; an obsession with over-thinking systems of control; an attraction to deceptively simple processes that create chaotic results; a desire to develop empathy for others through an understanding of their own stories; an appreciation for friendship and community. As a designer, she incorporates these concepts into projects that attempt to encourage social interaction around food waste reduction, recycling & composting education, and public interventions in public spaces.
